Es Trenc

Mallorcas Strände

Whether you come to play golf and enjoy Majorca during the summer or the winter (and all in between), the area of Es Trenc is always worth a visit!

During the long, warm summer months in Majorca the beach of Es Trenc is a well-visited spot. This is easy to understand once you get a peek of the crystalline turquoise waters and the white sandy beach, which makes you think of Caribbean beaches. During high-season the beach is very busy and you may have to look very hard to find a spot where to put your umbrella. During spring and autumn the beach is not quite as full, and those who find their way here during the low season are often year-round residents on the island, enjoying the 2 km of sandy beach.

Es Trenc lies in an area of natural conservation, where it nowadays is impossible to get builders permits. This means that parking is not the easiest thing to find close to the beach. There are car parks that “belong” to the beach, and to park here you have to pay a nice sum (around 10 €). But it is worth it, for a day at the beach! To bring a picnic is recommended since the restaurant/beach bars somehow always seem to be the furthest away from the spot you’ve chosen, and they often take a hefty price for the food the serve. Instead we recommend you bring some freshly baked bread, olive oil, tomatoes, cheese and ham and lots of water and maybe a bag of crisps and some fruit.

So Es Trenc in the summer is a given, but what can you do in the winter? The area around Es Trenc is a paradise for ornithologists. The beach itself becomes somewhat wilder during the winter when the sea grass blows in over the beach and settles like a warming blanket until the summer arrives again. It’s beautiful, but in a more subtle way than in the happy summer. A picnic and a walk along the beach or in the natural area is a great way to make the most of a free afternoon.

On you way to Es Trenc you will suddenly see towering mountains of purest white to the side of the road. Has it snowed, or have you gone mad? Neither! Near the famous beach we find a salt cultivation, Es Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc, which takes advantage of the salty Mediterranean water in the old fashioned way. The weather conditions at Es Trenc are perfect for salt cultivation; lots of sun, light breeze and low humidity. When the surface water in the salt ponds crystallizes the salt crystals take on a flower-like shape, hence the name Flor de Sal = salt flower. The salt is collected by a special type of rake, in accordance with the old traditional way to harvest salt. The salt production is well worth a visit, and if you fancy a bite to eat you can take the opportunity and order something here.

The salts you find here are very interesting, and are available in a rainbow of colors and flavors! All kinds of flavors from from red wine salt (the question is how effective it is if you spill red wine and need to sprinkle salt on the stain), Mediterranean salt (with spices like rosemary, savory, marjoram, thyme and oregano), hibiscus salt (with the exotic fragrance and deep violet color from the hibiscus flower), Sri Lanka salt (bright yellow with a mixture of coriander seeds, turmeric, fenugreek, cardamom, chili, black pepper, cayenne, cinnamon and cloves.. Yes, a whole bunch of different, exciting salts.. Our personal favorite is the pale pink sparkling rose salt, which salt crystals are flavored with the petals of Rosa Galicia and szechuan and black pepper. Great with fish!

The salts are also 100% natural, and contains no dyes or chemicals.
